A yellow diamond is the most attainable of the fancy colours, and the one that looks most like gold. “Canary” is a trade word, not a grade; what you are buying is a GIA colour grade, from Fancy Light to Fancy Vivid (GIA). Below: what the grades mean, the report to insist on, and the Leviev pieces we would own, from a $4,800 ring to a $225,000 bracelet. Several are one-of-one listings, and when one sells it is gone.

The short answer
Buy the colour grade, and buy it with a report. Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid are the rare, valuable yellows; “canary” alone means nothing. Insist on a lab report stating “natural color”. Our pick is the Leviev Crowned Cele, yellow alternating with white in white gold. For gold-on-gold, the Light of Aurum ring.
The verdict
A yellow diamond is the luxury stone that carries the colour of gold. Colour sets the price far more than clarity, so judge the face-up yellow first and the report second. White gold makes a yellow look deeper, and yellow gold makes the whole piece read gold. The two pieces below do one each, brilliantly.

Leviev Crowned Cele tennis bracelet: 25.73 carats of cushion-cut diamonds, Fancy Yellow alternating with white, in 18K white gold, VS clarity, $225,000 as of Oct 22, 2026, with one left on the listing. Set beside white, each yellow looks deeper, and white gold keeps the colour crisp.
The honest downside: Beyond the price: Leviev’s own site describes a bracelet of the same name with colourless stones. Confirm the stone colour with the seller and ask for the lab reports before you buy.

What does fancy yellow mean?
“Fancy” means the colour is strong enough to be graded as a colour, not a tint. GIA grades yellow face-up by hue, tone and saturation on a ladder: Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, and Fancy Deep or Dark. Paler yellows stay on the ordinary D-to-Z scale (GIA; King et al., 2005).
| GIA grade | What you see | What it means for price |
|---|---|---|
| Fancy Light | a soft, pale yellow | the most affordable fancy grade |
| Fancy | a clear yellow | the most common grade GIA sees for yellows |
| Fancy Intense | a saturated yellow | markedly rarer and higher priced |
| Fancy Vivid | the strongest, purest yellow | the rarest, and priced accordingly |
| Fancy Deep / Dark | a darker, deeper yellow | priced by how attractive the depth is |

Is a canary diamond the same as a yellow diamond?
Mostly, yes. “Canary” is a trade term for a bright yellow diamond, not a GIA grade. About 74% of fancy yellows GIA examined owe their colour to nitrogen clusters called cape defects, and about 13% to isolated nitrogen, the strongest yellows the trade calls true canaries (Gems & Gemology, 2020).
Are yellow diamonds rare and valuable?
Yellow is diamond’s second most common fancy colour, which is why it is the attainable one: far less costly than pink or blue. Value rises steeply with colour. Fancy Intense and Vivid are rare, colour matters more than clarity, and radiant cuts intensify yellow, which raises the price per carat (GIA).
The most famous yellow of all is the Tiffany Diamond: 287.42 carats rough from the Kimberley Mine in 1877, acquired by Charles Lewis Tiffany in 1878 and cut to 128.54 carats (Tiffany & Co.). Our jewelry guide covers the Tiffany setting and other signatures.

Leviev Light of Aurum: an 11.31-carat eternity ring of Asscher-cut Fancy Intense yellow diamonds in 18K yellow gold, VS clarity, $48,000 as of Oct 22, 2026, with one left. Yellow gold behind yellow stones makes the whole ring glow gold.
The honest downside: An eternity ring is set all the way round, so it is very hard to resize. Asscher cuts show colour less intensely than radiants.

Leviev 3.00-carat Fancy Yellow VS1 centre stone with trapezoid side stones and a halo, in white gold, listed as GIA certified, $38,500 as of Oct 22, 2026. A single graded centre stone is the clearest way to know exactly what you own.
The honest downside: “Fancy” is the middle of the ladder, not Intense or Vivid. Ask for the GIA report number and check it on GIA’s site before you buy.

Should you choose a yellow diamond or a white diamond?
Choose yellow if you want colour and presence for the money: a pale or mid-grade fancy yellow can cost less than a top colourless stone of the same size, and it reads as gold. Choose white for classic, icy brilliance. Set yellow beside white, as in the Crowned Cele, and each makes the other look better.
| Fancy yellow | Colourless (D-F) | |
|---|---|---|
| Graded on | hue, tone and saturation | absence of colour |
| Price driver | colour intensity first | colour, clarity and cut together |
| Look | warm, gold-like | icy, white |
| Treatment risk | HPHT and irradiation common: get a report | exists too: get a report |
| Best metal | white gold to deepen, yellow to glow | platinum or white gold |
How do you know a yellow diamond is natural?
Ask for a lab report that states “natural color”. HPHT lab-grown and treated yellows are common and often impossible to spot without a lab. GIA says every fancy-colour diamond should go to a laboratory for colour origin (GIA; treatments). GIA also issues reports for mounted stones (GIA).

Leviev Northwick: a 2.08-carat Fancy Yellow cushion-cut halo ring, $11,000 as of Oct 22, 2026. The cushion is the most common shape GIA sees for yellows, and the halo makes the centre look larger.
The honest downside: The listing details we have do not include a lab report, so ask the seller for one stating natural colour.

Leviev Flower Petal ring in 18K yellow gold with diamonds, $4,800 as of Oct 22, 2026: the least costly way into the collection.
The honest downside: Confirm the stone colours on the listing: it is a yellow-gold diamond ring, and the gold may be doing most of the yellow.

Who is Leviev?
Leviev grew out of diamond polishing: Lev Leviev opened his first polishing plant in 1977 (overview), and the jewelry house opened on London’s Old Bond Street in 2006, known for very large and coloured stones (WWD, May 8, 2006). The founder’s wider business has drawn public controversy, and we make no ethical claims on the brand’s behalf. We judge the pieces.
The honest downsides
- Colour on the Crowned Cele. The Amazon listing describes yellow alternating with white; Leviev’s own site lists a bracelet of the same name with colourless stones. Confirm the colour before you buy.
- Not every listing names a report. Only the 3.00-carat ring is listed as GIA certified. For the rest, ask for a lab report stating natural colour.
- One-of-one stock. Crowned Cele and Light of Aurum each show one left.
- Eternity rings and bangles resist resizing. Get the size right first.
- Colour grades vary across the collection. “Yellow diamond” in a title is not a grade. Ask which grade each stone carries.
Before you buy
- Authenticity. Ask for the lab report and check its number on the lab’s website. It should say “natural color”. Our authenticity checklist covers the rest.
- Warranty. These pieces are sold on Amazon by the listed seller. Leviev advertises its own warranty for direct sales, but don’t assume it carries over to Amazon. Ask the seller what is covered, and get the answer in writing.
- Returns. Check the return window shown on the listing before you order, and keep every tag, box and report. Resizing or engraving ends a return, so wear it as it arrived and alter it later.
- Sizing. Ring size and bracelet length come from the listing. Measure the wrist and add room for movement on a tennis bracelet. Eternity rings can’t be resized easily. Check the clasp and the safety catch.
Why do yellow diamonds cost what they do?
Colour sets the price. A Fancy Intense or Vivid costs many times a Fancy Light of the same size, because strong, even yellow is rare (GIA). Then comes carat weight, then the cut, since radiants concentrate colour, and finally the maker. A natural-colour report adds value, and its absence takes value away.
Questions people ask
What does fancy yellow mean on a diamond report?
It means the stone has enough yellow to be graded as a colour, not as a tint on the D-to-Z scale. GIA grades fancy yellows as Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, or Fancy Deep and Dark. Intense and Vivid are the rarest and most valuable. Check that the report also says natural colour.
Is a canary diamond worth more than a yellow diamond?
“Canary” is a trade term for a bright yellow diamond, not a grade, so it adds nothing on its own. What sets value is the GIA colour grade, and Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid are worth the most. Ask for the report and judge the grade, not the word on the label.
Are yellow diamonds cheaper than white diamonds?
Often, at the same size. Yellow is the second most common fancy colour, so pale and mid-grade yellows can cost less than top colourless stones. Fancy Intense and Vivid yellows can match or exceed them. Colour intensity drives the price of a yellow, while a white is priced on colour, clarity and cut together.
How can you tell if a yellow diamond is natural?
Only a gem lab can say for certain. Lab-grown and treated yellows, made by HPHT or irradiation, are common and often look identical. Ask for a GIA or comparable report that states natural colour. GIA will also grade stones that are already set in jewelry, so a mounted piece can be checked.
Which metal suits a yellow diamond best?
White gold or platinum makes a yellow look deeper and cooler, which is why many settings put yellow centres in white metal. Yellow gold makes the whole piece glow gold, which suits a gift for an occasion where gold carries meaning, such as Lunar New Year or a wedding. Both are correct.
