At a Chinese wedding, gold is the gift that says the most. It stands for fortune and longevity, it has long been the most popular wedding gift, and a bride traditionally wears much of it on the day (SCMP, Oct 29, 2024). Customs differ by family and dialect group, so this guide names them: si dian jin, dragon-and-phoenix bangles, and what a guest can give. The traditional pieces are priced by weight, and the one-of-one luxury pieces sell once, so settle the choice before the betrothal date.

The short answer
If your family follows si dian jin, buy a matched four-piece set in high-purity gold from a goldsmith, priced by weight. For a single piece, the Chow Sang Sang 999.9 pendant or bangle. For a modern bride who will wear her gold for years, an 18K bangle such as the IceCarats hinged bangle, or the Leviev Luce Continua.
The verdict
Gold given at a wedding is both a blessing and the bride’s own security, so purity and weight matter more than fashion. Buy the traditional pieces by weight in 24K. Buy the piece she will wear every day in 18K. They are different gifts, and one doesn’t replace the other.

Chow Sang Sang 999.9 (24K) gold bangle, 2.99g, listed price-by-weight at $689 as of Oct 22, 2026. High-purity gold from a Hong Kong jeweler, the kind of gold a family will recognise at a betrothal.
The honest downside: At 2.99g it is a light bangle, not a heavy wedding bangle, and pure gold bends. Measure the hand before you buy.

What is si dian jin?
Si dian jin, “four touches of gold”, is a set of four pieces: a necklace, a bangle or bracelet, a ring and a pair of earrings. The groom’s family presents it at guo da li, the betrothal ceremony. It is a Teochew (Chiu Chow) and Hokkien custom, traditionally in high-purity gold (Tatler Asia; SK Jewellery).
Four is usually avoided in gifts because it sounds like the word for death (overview), and si dian jin is the recognised exception. The set is also the bride’s own financial security, which is why it is bought by weight (SK Jewellery).
What are dragon-and-phoenix bangles?
Dragon-and-phoenix bangles, the dragon for the groom and the phoenix for the bride, are the wedding gold more typical of Cantonese and Hakka families, often given at the tea ceremony (Tatler Asia; SCMP). They are traditionally heavy, high-purity gold, priced by weight.
We have not found a dragon-and-phoenix bangle, or a full si dian jin set, on Amazon that we would recommend. For either, buy from an established goldsmith, by weight, with a receipt that states purity and grams.

Which wedding gold tradition is which?
Families mix these, and many follow more than one, so ask the couple’s family rather than assume. As a rough guide from our sources, here is who gives what and when, and how the pieces are usually priced.
| Tradition | Who gives it, and when | Gold |
|---|---|---|
| Si dian jin (four pieces) | The groom’s family (Teochew, Hokkien), at guo da li, the betrothal | High-purity, by weight |
| Dragon-and-phoenix bangles | Families (Cantonese, Hakka), at the tea ceremony | High-purity, by weight |
| Gold worn on the day | The bride, on the wedding day | Mostly high-purity |
| A guest gift | Guests, at the banquet or tea ceremony | A red envelope, or a small gold piece |

Chow Sang Sang 999.9 (24K) gold pendant, 2.24g, price-by-weight, $562 as of Oct 22, 2026. A single pendant a family can add to the set they are assembling.
The honest downside: It is one piece, not a set, and 24K scratches easily. Check whether a chain is included.

What should a guest give at a Chinese wedding?
Most guests give a red envelope. If you want to give gold, keep it small and in a red box: a 24K charm or pendant is enough. Avoid sets of four from a guest; si dian jin belongs to the groom’s family. Eight, which sounds like “prosper”, is a welcome number (NPR).

Best for the bride’s everyday bangle

IceCarats 18K solid yellow-gold hinged bangle, 7.5 inches, $5,346 as of Oct 22, 2026. A hinged bangle opens to go on, so it suits a smaller hand, and 18K keeps its shape through daily wear.
The honest downside: It is 18K, not the 24K of traditional wedding gold. The 7.5-inch size is fixed, and hinged bangles have a clasp to check.

Best for 22K tradition

SODEF 7-gram 22K yellow-gold Burma bracelet with a twisted design, $2,025 as of Oct 22, 2026. 22K sits between the softness of 24K and the strength of 18K.
The honest downside: A Burmese-style 22K bracelet is not Chinese wedding gold; give it to a family that prefers 22K.

Is 24K gold the right choice for a wedding?
For the traditional pieces, yes. Si dian jin and dragon-and-phoenix bangles are usually high-purity gold priced by weight, because the gold is also the bride’s security. For jewelry she will wear daily, 18K is harder and can hold diamonds. Many brides keep the 24K set safe and wear 18K.
What is the luxury version of wedding gold?
For a bride who wants gold she will wear long after the banquet, an 18K bangle with diamonds or a yellow-diamond ring in yellow gold. The Leviev Light of Aurum carries the colour of gold in the stones themselves. Our yellow diamonds guide explains the grades.

Leviev Luce Continua bangle, 1.68 carats of diamonds in 18K gold, $17,500 as of Oct 22, 2026. A clean line of gold and diamonds, for a gift the bride will wear for decades.
The honest downside: It is not traditional wedding gold and does not replace a si dian jin set. A bangle has to fit over the hand and is hard to resize.

The honest downsides
- No full set or dragon-and-phoenix bangle. We have not found either on Amazon that we would recommend, so buy those from a goldsmith by weight.
- Light weights. The Chow Sang Sang pieces are 2.24g and 2.99g: single, light pieces, not traditional heavy wedding gold.
- 24K wears. Pure gold scratches and bends with daily wear.
- 18K and 22K are different gifts. The IceCarats and SODEF pieces are fine gold, but not the high-purity gold many families expect.
- Prices follow gold. Pieces priced by weight move with the gold price; ours were checked on Oct 22, 2026.
Before you buy
- Authenticity. Look for the 999 or 999.9 stamp and the maker’s mark, and keep a receipt that states purity and weight. For any diamond, ask for a lab report. Our authenticity checklist covers the rest.
- Warranty. The listed seller’s terms apply on Amazon. Ask what is covered, and get the answer in writing. A maker’s direct-sale warranty doesn’t automatically apply to an Amazon listing.
- Returns. Check the return window shown on the listing before the betrothal date, and keep tags and boxes. Engraving or resizing ends a return.
- Sizing. Bangle size comes from the inner diameter or length on the listing, such as the IceCarats 7.5 inches; measure the widest part of the hand. Check every clasp before the day.
Why does wedding gold cost what it does?
Traditional wedding gold is priced by weight: the gold price on the day plus a workmanship charge, which is why heavy dragon-and-phoenix bangles cost so much more than a pendant. 18K pieces are priced more by design and maker, and diamond pieces mostly by the stones.

What gold should a guest give at a Chinese wedding?
Most guests give a red envelope. If you want to give gold, keep it small: a 24K charm or pendant in a red box is enough. Avoid giving a set of four as a guest, since si dian jin belongs to the groom’s family. Ask the family if you are unsure.
Is Chinese wedding gold always 24K?
Traditional pieces such as si dian jin and dragon-and-phoenix bangles are usually high-purity gold, 999 or 999.9, priced by weight. Many brides also wear 18K jewelry, which is harder and holds diamonds. Choose 24K for tradition and value, and 18K for the pieces she will wear every day.
