Lunar New Year falls on Saturday, Feb 6, 2027, and opens the Year of the Goat (Hong Kong Observatory; Smithsonian). In many families the gift that matters most is a piece of gold. The World Gold Council calls buying “something gold” a long-standing new-year tradition and notes that the weeks before it are the busiest gold-buying season of the year. Below are the pieces we would give, from a $123 charm to a yellow-diamond ring, each with its catch. The 24K pieces and the one-of-one rings are thin on stock, so buy early enough to have the piece in hand and checked before the day.

The short answer
For a parent or grandparent, give 24K gold priced by weight: the Chow Sang Sang 999.9 pendant is the most traditional pick here. For a red-envelope-sized gift, the Chow Tai Fook Fortune Purse charm. For a once-in-a-decade gift, the Leviev Light of Aurum, an 18K yellow-gold ring set all round with Fancy Intense yellow diamonds.
The verdict
Gold is the gift. The sourced tradition is gold, not the colour yellow: red stays the colour of the new year. A small piece of high-purity gold is the gift most families will recognise straight away. A yellow diamond in yellow gold is the modern, luxurious way to say the same thing.

Chow Sang Sang 999.9 (24K) gold pendant, 2.24g, listed “price-by-weight” at $562 as of Oct 22, 2026. Pure gold sold by the gram is the form a traditional family will read as a proper new-year gift, and its value is easy to explain.
The honest downside: 24K is soft. It scratches and dents with daily wear, and the listing is for the pendant, so check whether a chain is included before you plan to give it on the day.

Why is gold given at Lunar New Year?
Gold stands for prosperity and good fortune, and its luck partly comes from its colour, which once signalled imperial rank. The World Gold Council found that more than 70% of Chinese fashion and lifestyle consumers feel gold brings good luck, compared with 57% globally. Elders may put gold, not only money, in red envelopes (WGC, Jan 20, 2020).
The yellow link is real but specific. In the Qing dynasty, bright yellow was reserved for the emperor and empress at court; you can see it in the V&A and Met dragon robes. Red, not yellow, remains the colour of the new year itself, so we frame a yellow diamond as “the colour of gold and of emperors”, never as a lucky colour.
The envelope goes by many names: hongbao in Mandarin, lai see in Cantonese, ang pao in Hokkien and lì xì in Vietnamese (overview). If you are a guest, a small gold charm handed over in a red envelope or red box is a gift your hosts will understand.

Which gold gift is right for which person?
Match the piece to the person, not to the price. Elders tend to value purity and weight. Younger relatives and partners often prefer something they can wear daily. A child or a guest gift should be small. Here is how the pieces on this page line up, with prices checked on Oct 22, 2026 and subject to change.
| Recipient | Piece | Price (Oct 22, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Parent or grandparent | Chow Sang Sang 24K pendant, 2.24g | $562 |
| Red-envelope gift | Chow Tai Fook 24K Fortune Purse charm | $261 |
| Born in a Dragon year | Chow Sang Sang 24K Dragon charm | $123 |
| A wrist they wear daily | Chow Sang Sang 24K bangle, 2.99g | $689 |
| A stacking bangle | Kooljewelry 18K 2mm bangle | $625 |
| Partner, a milestone year | Leviev Light of Aurum, 18K with Fancy Intense yellow diamonds | $48,000 |
Best for a red-envelope-sized gift

Chow Tai Fook 999 (24K) gold Fortune Purse charm or pendant, $261 as of Oct 22, 2026, rated 5.0 stars from 18 ratings. The purse shape speaks for itself, and it is small enough to tuck into a red envelope.
The honest downside: It is a charm: it needs a chain or bracelet to be worn, and 18 ratings is a small sample.

Best for someone born in a Dragon year

Chow Sang Sang 999.9 (24K) zodiac charm, the Dragon, $123 as of Oct 22, 2026. Dragon years include 1988, 2000, 2012 and 2024. For January and February birthdays, check the lunar new year date for the birth year.
The honest downside: At 3.8 stars from 58 ratings it is the lowest-rated piece here, so read the recent reviews on size. And 2027 is the Year of the Goat: we have not found a Goat piece we would recommend yet.

Chow Sang Sang 999.9 (24K) gold bangle, 2.99g, listed price-by-weight at $689 as of Oct 22, 2026. A light bangle in pure gold is easy to wear daily and reads clearly as gold.
The honest downside: At 2.99g it is light for a bangle, and pure gold bends. Check the inner diameter against the widest part of the hand before you buy.

Best for a stacking bangle

Kooljewelry 18K yellow-gold 2mm polished bangle, $625 as of Oct 22, 2026. 18K is harder than 24K, so it stands up to daily wear and stacks with a watch.
The honest downside: It is 18K, not the high-purity gold many families expect for a new-year gift, and at 2mm it is a fine bangle, not a weighty one.

What is the luckiest luxury gift for Lunar New Year?
For a partner or a milestone, a yellow diamond set in yellow gold carries the colour of gold and of the imperial court, with the lasting value of a fine stone. The Leviev Light of Aurum is the most gold-coloured piece we found. Ask for a lab report that states “natural color” before you give a fancy yellow diamond.
Our yellow diamonds guide explains the grades, from Fancy Light to Fancy Vivid, and why the report matters.

Leviev Light of Aurum: an 11.31-carat eternity ring of Asscher-cut Fancy Intense yellow diamonds in 18K yellow gold, VS clarity, $48,000 as of Oct 22, 2026, with one left on the listing. Fancy Intense sits above Fancy on GIA’s colour scale, and set in yellow gold the whole ring reads gold.
The honest downside: Stones set all the way round make an eternity ring very hard to resize, so the size must be right first time. There is only one, and Asscher cuts show their colour less strongly than radiant cuts.

Best for a modern bangle in 18K gold

Leviev Luce Continua bangle, 1.68 carats of diamonds in 18K gold, $17,500 as of Oct 22, 2026. A clean gold line with diamonds is the version of a gold bangle that suits a wedding, an anniversary or a new-year gift for a partner.
The honest downside: It is a gold-and-diamond bangle, not a yellow-diamond piece. A bangle has to fit over the hand and can rarely be resized, so measure first.

Is 24K or 18K better for a Lunar New Year gift?
For tradition, 24K. High-purity 999 or 999.9 gold is what many families mean by a gold gift, and it is priced largely by weight. For daily wear, 18K: it is 75% gold, harder, and can hold diamonds. Neither is the wrong choice. 24K reads as wealth, and 18K reads as jewelry.
| 24K (999 / 999.9) | 18K (750) | |
|---|---|---|
| Gold content | 99.9% or more | 75% |
| Priced by | mostly weight | design, maker and stones |
| Wear | soft, marks easily | harder, daily wear |
| Holds diamonds | rarely | yes |
| Reads as | a traditional gift of value | fine jewelry |
What should you avoid giving?
Avoid sets of four for a new-year gift, because the word for four sounds like the word for death in Chinese (overview). The number eight, which sounds like “prosper”, is welcome (NPR). Avoid calling yellow the lucky colour; red is the colour of the new year. And never promise that a piece will bring luck. It is given for luck, which is a different thing.
Is Lunar New Year only a Chinese holiday?
No. Lunar New Year is also Tết in Vietnam and Seollal in Korea, and customs differ by family and region (Smithsonian). In Vietnam, many people buy gold on the God of Wealth Day, the 10th day of the new year, queuing before dawn (VietNamNet). In 2027 that falls on Monday, Feb 15, counted from Feb 6.
Our lucky jewelry guide covers gold traditions beyond the new year, and our Chinese wedding gold guide covers si dian jin and dragon-and-phoenix bangles.

The honest downsides
- 24K is soft. The Chow Sang Sang and Chow Tai Fook pieces will scratch and dent. That is normal for pure gold, but it surprises people used to 18K.
- Thin ratings on the charms. The Fortune Purse has 18 ratings and the Dragon charm sits at 3.8 stars, so read the recent reviews.
- No Goat piece yet. 2027 is the Year of the Goat, and we have not found a Goat zodiac piece we would recommend on Amazon.
- No red-and-gold piece. We have not found a red-and-gold piece of the quality we would put here.
- The Leviev pieces are one-of-one listings. Light of Aurum shows one left, and an eternity ring is very hard to resize.
- Prices move with gold. Pieces priced by weight follow the gold price, so the prices here, checked on Oct 22, 2026, will change.
Before you buy
- Authenticity. For 24K, look for the 999 or 999.9 stamp and the maker’s mark, and keep the tag and receipt. For a fancy yellow diamond, ask for a lab report that states “natural color”; GIA grades mounted stones too. Our authenticity checklist walks through the rest.
- Warranty. These pieces are sold on Amazon by the listed seller, so the seller’s terms apply. Leviev’s own direct-sale warranty does not automatically carry over to Amazon listings, so ask the seller what is covered, and get the answer in writing.
- Returns. Check the return window shown on each listing before you order, and keep every tag and box. Engraving, resizing or cutting a chain ends a return, so give the gift as it arrived and alter it later.
- Sizing. Bangle size comes from the listing’s inner diameter or length; measure the widest part of the hand. Rings: confirm the size, because eternity rings cannot be resized easily. Check the clasp on any chain before you wrap it.
Why does gold cost what it does?
High-purity gold is priced mostly by weight, which is why the Chow Sang Sang listings say “price-by-weight”: the gold price on the day plus the maker’s work. 18K pieces are priced more by design and finish. Fancy yellow diamonds are priced above all by colour, so a Fancy Intense ring costs far more than a pale one of the same size.
Best for the once-in-a-lifetime gift

Leviev Crowned Cele tennis bracelet: 25.73 carats of cushion-cut diamonds, Fancy Yellow alternating with white, in 18K white gold, VS clarity, $225,000 as of Oct 22, 2026, with one left on the listing. Yellow beside white makes each yellow look deeper, and it is the most dramatic yellow-diamond piece we found.
The honest downside: The price, plainly. And Leviev’s own site describes a bracelet of the same name with colourless stones, so confirm the stone colour with the seller and ask for the lab reports before you buy.

Questions people ask
What is a good Lunar New Year gift for parents?
A small piece of high-purity gold. A 24K pendant or bangle priced by weight is the gift many parents and grandparents will recognise straight away. The Chow Sang Sang 999.9 pendant is our pick at $562 as of Oct 22, 2026. Give it in a red box or a red envelope.
Can you put gold in a red envelope?
Yes. The World Gold Council notes that elders may give red envelopes containing money or valuable gifts such as gold. A small 24K charm, such as the Chow Tai Fook Fortune Purse at $261 as of Oct 22, 2026, fits inside one. Avoid sets of four, which many families consider unlucky.
When is Lunar New Year 2027?
Lunar New Year falls on Saturday, Feb 6, 2027, according to the Hong Kong Observatory, and it opens the Year of the Goat. The Lantern Festival follows on Saturday, Feb 20, 2027. Order gold gifts early, because the weeks before the holiday are the busiest gold-buying season.
Is a yellow diamond lucky for Lunar New Year?
No diamond promises luck. Red is the colour of the new year, and gold is the metal of prosperity. A yellow diamond set in yellow gold carries the colour of gold and of the imperial court, which makes it a meaningful luxury gift. Ask for a report stating natural colour.
Is 24K gold better than 18K for a gift?
For tradition, 24K: it is at least 99.9% gold and priced mostly by weight, which many families expect. For daily wear, 18K: it is 75% gold, harder and able to hold diamonds. Choose by how the person will use the piece, not by purity alone.
