How to Store Luxury Handbags and Jewelry: The Quiet Care Kit

How the specialists keep bags and jewelry at their best: tissue and dust bags, why you never hang a handbag, purse organizer inserts and when to take them out, jewelry boxes that keep pieces apart, and which cleaners are safe for which stones.

The people who handle the finest bags and jewelry for a living don’t own special potions. They own tissue paper, cotton dust bags and boxes with separate compartments, and they follow a few rules without exception. Never hang a handbag. Never toss jewelry loose into a drawer. Clean gently, and know which stones can’t take a machine.

This is how to store luxury handbags and jewelry the way specialists at Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Hermès and the Gemological Institute of America describe it, along with the few accessories worth buying to make it easier.

The short answer

Our verdict: for bags, the best storage is free. It’s the dust bag and box the bag came with, light stuffing with acid-free tissue, and a shelf rather than a hook. Buy an organizer insert for the bags you carry every day, and take it out before the bag goes into storage. For jewelry, a lined box with separate compartments is the one purchase that matters, and the Kendal box is our pick. Use mild soap and a soft cloth before any machine.

Best for a full jewelry collection

The Kendal extra-large jewelry case in PU leather, with six tiers and five drawers, listed at $55.99. It had 4.8 stars from 4,428 ratings when we checked. Separate drawers keep rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets apart, which is exactly what the GIA recommends.

The honest downside: It’s PU, a synthetic, not real leather, and with six tiers it’s a substantial piece of furniture. Measure your dresser first.

How to store a luxury handbag

The specialists agree on the basics. Christie’s handbag team suggests emptying and dusting the bag, then stuffing it lightly with acid-free tissue, a small pillow or bubble wrap so it keeps its shape. Wrap buckles and zipper pulls in tissue so they don’t press marks into the leather. Put the bag in a breathable dust bag, or a neutral cotton pillowcase if you’ve lost the original, big enough that the bag doesn’t warp.

Then the rule people break most: don’t hang it. Christie’s warns that hanging distorts the handles. Store bags upright on a shelf tall enough that the handles aren’t pressed down, or lay them flat. Keep the hardware of one bag from touching another, and keep anything away from patent leather, which can transfer color.

For a Birkin, Sotheby’s recommends storing it lying on its back in its dust bag and box, lightly stuffed, with a small bolster under the handles. Wrap the straps around the spindle rather than threading them through, so they don’t dent. Hermès itself advises a warm, dry place away from light, preferably in the box or protective cover, and says it doesn’t recommend moisture-absorbing sachets. Ink, lipstick and fragrance can mark leather permanently, so keep them in a pouch rather than loose inside.

The handbags guide explains how specialists read a bag’s leather, stitching and stamps, and why condition decides so much of a bag’s value. Our story on Grace Kelly and the Hermès Kelly is a reminder that a bag carried for decades can become more loved, not less.

The best purse organizer inserts, and when to take them out

An organizer insert is a removable liner with pockets. It holds the bag’s shape from inside, keeps keys and pens off the lining, and lets you move everything to another bag in one lift. For a bag you carry every day, it’s the single most useful accessory.

But don’t store a bag with its insert inside. PurseBop warns that inserts and pillows left in place for long periods can leave creases that may not come out. Use the insert while you carry the bag. When the bag goes on the shelf, the insert comes out and the tissue goes in.

Best for a Hermès Picotin

DGAZ’s silk insert cut for the Picotin bag, shown in Blue Nuit, size PC22, and listed at $67.90 with 4.8 stars from 419 ratings. Silk is the lightest, smoothest lining here, and an insert shaped for one model fits better than a generic one.

The honest downside: DGAZ makes it, not Hermès, and it’s cut for a single bag. Check the size code against your Picotin before ordering, and expect to pay more than for a generic insert.

Best for totes and shoulder bags

ZTUJO’s silky-touch organizer insert with a bottle holder, listed at $27.88 with 4.5 stars from 802 ratings. A smooth lining at under half the price of the silk insert.

The honest downside: A bottle holder is handy, but a water bottle inside a fine bag is a risk to the leather. Keep the cap tight, or leave the bottle out.

Best for keeping valuables zipped away

An organizer insert with a separate zipper bag, listed at $22.55 with 4.4 stars from 844 ratings. The zipped pouch keeps cards and jewelry from rolling around an open tote.

The honest downside: It has the lowest rating of the four inserts. Check the dimensions on the listing against the inside of your bag.

Best for structured totes on a budget

A felt tote organizer insert in six sizes, listed at $23.99. It’s the most reviewed product in this guide, with 4.5 stars from 35,666 ratings.

The honest downside: Felt is the stiffest and bulkiest material here. In a soft, slouchy bag it can push the sides out, so it suits structured totes better.

How to store jewelry so pieces don’t scratch each other

The GIA puts it plainly: jewelry should never be tossed into a drawer or on top of a dresser. The original box or pouch is a perfect place to keep a piece. Otherwise, boxes with individually padded slots for rings and posts for necklaces and bracelets are ideal. Sterling silver belongs in an anti-tarnish bag or cloth.

Pearls and opals need a little care of their own. The GIA notes that they draw moisture from the air, so a very dry place such as a safe deposit box can do more harm than good. Keep them in a padded compartment of their own. The GIA also suggests having jewelry checked by a jeweler every six months.

Best for a compact vanity collection

VLANDO’s leather jewelry box with four layers, a retractable tray and two drawers, listed at $45.99 with 4.8 stars from 640 ratings. Smaller than the Kendal, and better suited to a collection that fits on a vanity.

The honest downside: With fewer compartments than the Kendal, a large collection will outgrow it. It also has far fewer ratings to judge it by.

The jewelry guide covers the signature pieces worth knowing and how to read hallmarks. The GIA also warns that hairspray, perfume and other cosmetics can permanently damage the surface of pearls and porous stones such as turquoise, so put those pieces on last. The fragrances themselves live in The Vanity.

Cleaning: soap first, machines with care

The GIA’s safest method is also the simplest. Most colored gems can be cleaned with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft brush. Rinse them in a glass of water rather than over the sink, so a loose stone can’t disappear down the drain. Pearls need an unused makeup brush and warm, soapy water, and a strand should dry flat on a towel.

Ultrasonic cleaners are where people get into trouble. The GIA says they should not be used on emeralds, opals, pearls, coral, amber or other organic or porous materials. They’re also unsafe for stones whose fractures have been filled or that have been coated or oiled, and for heat-sensitive gems such as tanzanite, topaz, turquoise, lapis and moonstone. The vibration can also shake stones loose. And never put a watch in one.

Best for everyday jewelry cleaning

A jewelry cleaner kit with an 8oz bottle, a dipping basket, a brush and a polishing cloth, listed at $19.99 with 4.3 stars from 1,409 ratings.

The honest downside: Read the label for which stones and metals it suits, and keep pearls, opals, emeralds and other porous or treated stones out of any solution unless the maker says they’re safe.

Best for larger collections

Caribbean Gem’s cleaner in 16oz and 8oz bottles, with a basket, brush and polishing cloth, listed at $29.99 with 4.5 stars from 1,064 ratings.

The honest downside: Twenty-four ounces is a lot of cleaner for a small collection. As with any solution, check the label before cleaning pearls or soft stones.

KUNPHY’s 48kHz ultrasonic jewelry cleaner, listed at $25.57 with 4.4 stars from 7,877 ratings. For sturdy pieces such as plain gold bands, it’s a fast way to clear grime from the back of a setting.

The honest downside: It’s the riskiest tool here. Follow the GIA’s list: no emeralds, opals, pearls or other porous or treated stones, no fragile vintage settings, and never a watch. Check the settings for loose stones before and after.

The Pro Size polishing cloth, made in the USA, listed at $13.95. It had 4.7 stars from 24,273 ratings.

The honest downside: Keep it off pearls and soft stones, and go gently on plated pieces, where polishing can wear through the plating over time.

Before you buy

Authenticity. Inserts, boxes and cleaners are third-party products. An insert “for Picotin” is made to fit a Hermès bag, not made by Hermès. If you’re buying a pre-owned bag, ask whether the dust bag, box and any felt protector come with it, because the specialists rely on them for storage and buyers ask for them at resale.

The seller’s warranty. These are inexpensive products, and warranties vary by seller. Check the listing for an ultrasonic cleaner in particular, since it has a motor and a heating bath.

Returns. Return terms are shown on each listing and set by the seller. Try an insert in the bag at home, with tags kept, and return it if it presses against the sides or the handles.

Sizing. Measure the inside of your bag at the base before choosing an insert, and match a model-specific insert to its size code. For a jewelry box, count rings and necklaces and allow room for the next piece.

A simple routine

  1. When you get home, empty the bag, dust it and take out the insert.
  2. Stuff it lightly with tissue, wrap the hardware and put it in its dust bag on a shelf, never on a hook.
  3. Take jewelry off after cosmetics and perfume have settled, and put each piece back in its own compartment.
  4. Once a month, clean everyday jewelry with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Twice a year, ask a jeweler to check the settings.
