A fine watch asks for very little. Rolex says its watches need little day-to-day care beyond a soft cloth now and then, a wash with soapy water and a soft brush, and a full service when the time comes. Everything else in the world of luxury watch accessories is optional.
Optional isn’t the same as pointless, though. The right box stops two watches from knocking together in a drawer. A good leather strap can change the character of a watch you’ve worn for years. And a winder, chosen for the right reasons, saves a collector from resetting three dates every Monday morning.

The short answer
Our verdict: buy a lined watch box before anything else. It protects every watch you own, and the TAWBURY Bayswater is the one we’d choose. Add a soft cloth. Buy a winder only if you rotate several automatics or own a calendar watch, because a time-and-date Rolex doesn’t need one. Leave ultrasonic cleaners and case openers well away from a fine watch.
Best for small collections

The TAWBURY Bayswater holds eight watches above a storage drawer, in the chestnut finish shown on the listing. It had a 4.9-star average from 1,057 ratings when we checked, the highest of any box here, and was listed at $169.
The honest downside: Eight slots is a commitment in size and price. If you own two watches, the smaller boxes below do the same job for less.

Do you need a watch winder for a Rolex?

Probably not, if it’s the only watch you wear. A winder is a small motorized cradle that turns an automatic watch when it’s off the wrist, so the mainspring stays wound and the watch keeps running. Current Rolex movements such as the calibre 3235 have a power reserve of approximately 70 hours, so a Datejust left on the dresser on Friday evening may still be running on Monday morning. If it has stopped, it takes a minute to wind and set.
Watchmakers are blunt about it. Henry Ly of Watchmaking Project told Gear Patrol that a winder isn’t necessary, and that modern synthetic oils don’t gum up when a watch sits still. Formex makes the opposite point too: a watch that runs nonstop wears its parts nonstop, especially on a winder set to the wrong number of turns.
Where a winder does earn its place is with calendar complications and collections in rotation. Setting a perpetual calendar that has stopped is fiddly, and an owner with four automatics would otherwise reset them all the time. Bob’s Watches reaches the same conclusion, and says most modern Rolex calibres are happy at 650 turns per day in both directions. Check your own calibre before you set any winder.
If you do buy one, look for adjustable turns per day and direction, and make sure you know whether it plugs in or runs on batteries. Shielded motors matter too, because a poorly made winder can magnetize a watch.
The best watch winders, by budget
Best for one Rolex worn on weekends

The BARRINGTON single winder, listed at $475, with a 4.7-star average from 477 ratings. One cushion, one watch: the right size for someone whose weekend watch sits out the working week.
The honest downside: At $475 it costs more than many owners need to spend, and one slot won’t grow with a collection. Check the listing for the turns-per-day settings before you buy.

Best for an heirloom setup of three

Wolf’s Heritage triple winder has a glass cover and holds three watches. It was listed at $1,464.81, with 4.5 stars from 1,088 ratings.
The honest downside: It’s a piece of furniture at a furniture price. For three time-and-date watches you’d wear in turn anyway, the money would buy a good deal of servicing instead.

Best for value in a rotation of four
Saves it in your cart for later. No purchase until you check out.
Four winding positions, three storage slots and an LCD touch screen, listed at $254.99 with 4.4 stars from 529 ratings. For the owner of four automatics in rotation, it costs less per watch than any other winder here.
The honest downside: It’s the least discreet design here, and an LCD screen on a dresser won’t suit every bedroom.

Best for a warm, natural look

A bamboo single or dual winder, listed at $159.99 with 4.4 stars from 661 ratings. Bamboo reads softer than black lacquer, and the price makes it a sensible first winder.
The honest downside: At this price, check the motor and settings on the listing carefully, since motor quality is where cheaper winders tend to cut corners.

A box that keeps them apart

The quietest damage to a watch happens in a drawer. Two bracelets touch, a clasp drags across a polished bezel, and a hairline scratch appears that no cloth will remove. A box with separate cushions stops all of that. It’s the one accessory every owner should have, which is why it leads this guide.
When you choose, count your watches and add two. Collections grow. Then check the cushion size against your largest bracelet, because a big steel bracelet needs room to close around the pillow.
Best for a growing collection

The ROTHWELL 12-slot leather watch box with a valet drawer, listed at $134.95. It had 4.8 stars from 2,387 ratings, the most reviewed of the leather boxes here.
The honest downside: Twelve slots makes a big box. If your collection is three watches and likely to stay that way, it’s more box than you need.

Best for a mid-size collection

The same ROTHWELL design with ten slots and a valet drawer, listed at $104.95, with 4.8 stars from 1,202 ratings.
The honest downside: Only $30 less than the 12-slot version, so if you think you’ll grow, the larger box is better value.

Best for tight budgets

The Glenor Co 12-slot watch box, listed at $54.95. It’s the most reviewed box in this guide, with 4.8 stars from 8,718 ratings.
The honest downside: It costs less than half the price of the ROTHWELL, and you should expect plainer materials and finishing. Read the listing’s materials before you buy it as a gift.

Leather straps: a softer way to wear a watch

A leather strap is the cheapest way to make a familiar watch feel new. A steel sports watch on tan leather goes from weekday to weekend. It’s also kinder in summer, lighter on the wrist, and easy to swap back.
Two cautions. First, measure. These four straps are 20mm, the distance between the lugs, and many watches use another width, so check yours with a ruler or the maker’s specifications. Second, leather and water don’t mix. Rolex’s own care advice for washing a watch with soapy water excludes leather straps, so keep a leather-strapped watch out of the pool and save the bracelet for the beach.
Best for a vintage look

The Getalia Tuscany strap in natural vegetable-tanned Italian leather, listed at $24.99 with 4.5 stars from 925 ratings.
The honest downside: Vegetable-tanned leather darkens and marks with wear. That’s the charm for some owners and a nuisance for others.

Best for changing straps often

Archer’s top-grain leather strap with quick-release spring bars, listed at $34.99 with 4.6 stars from 778 ratings. Quick-release bars let you swap straps by hand, without a tool near the case.
The honest downside: It’s the most expensive of the four, and quick-release bars should be checked from time to time to make sure they’re seated properly.

A soft Horween leather strap with quick-release bars, sold in a range of widths from 18mm. It was listed at $25.99, with 4.4 stars from 2,019 ratings.
The honest downside: It has the lowest rating of the four straps, and with several widths on one listing, make sure you choose 20mm, or whatever your watch needs.

Best for dress watches

Benchmark’s Italian full-grain leather strap, listed at $34.95 with 4.5 stars from 501 ratings. Full grain is the dressiest finish here, suited to a Datejust or a gold watch.
The honest downside: It has the fewest ratings of the four, so there’s less owner feedback to go on.

Cleaning and small tools: what to use, and what to avoid
Rolex’s advice is short. Use a microfiber cloth, wash the case and metal bracelet with soapy water and a soft brush now and then, and screw the crown down tightly first. After the sea, rinse with fresh water.
What Rolex doesn’t suggest is polishing at home. Its FAQ says professional polishing should only be done by an Official Rolex Service Center. And never put a watch in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. Rolex does clean parts ultrasonically during a service, but only once the watch is fully dismantled. Our story on servicing a Rolex walks through what happens on the bench.
Best for gold and polished surfaces

The Pro Size polishing cloth, made in the USA for gold, silver and platinum, listed at $13.95. It had 24,273 ratings averaging 4.7 stars, the most of anything in this guide.
The honest downside: A polishing cloth isn’t the same as a plain microfiber cloth. Use it on jewelry and polished gold, and keep it off brushed steel, where it can change the finish. For a quick wipe of the watch itself, a plain microfiber cloth is the safer choice.

BYNIIUR’s watch link removal kit, which also includes a case opener, listed at $19.89 with 4.6 stars from 16,299 ratings. Its spring-bar tools make it handy for strap changes.
The honest downside: Keep it away from the case back and bracelet of a fine watch. One slip leaves a scratch, and opening the case can compromise its water resistance. Have a jeweler or service center size a luxury bracelet.

Before you buy
Authenticity. None of these accessories is made by a watch house. They’re third-party products, and they say so. Be wary of any strap or box that carries a watchmaker’s logo without being sold by that maker. If you’re buying the watch itself pre-owned, our guide to box and papers explains what to ask for.
The seller’s warranty. Warranty terms for winders and boxes vary by maker and seller. Look for them on the listing, and keep the order confirmation, especially for a winder, where the motor is the part most likely to fail.
Returns. Return windows and conditions are shown on each Amazon listing and set by the seller. Keep the packaging until you’re sure a box fits your watches or a winder runs quietly enough for the bedroom.
Sizing. Measure your lug width before buying a strap. Check that a winder or box cushion fits your wrist size and bracelet. Count your watches, then add two, before choosing a box.
The kit, by owner
- One watch, worn daily: a microfiber cloth and the Glenor box for the nights it comes off. No winder.
- Two or three watches in rotation: a ROTHWELL box and a leather strap to change the mood of one of them. Set the date when you pick each one up.
- Four or more automatics, or a calendar watch: the four-watch winder or the BARRINGTON for the piece that matters most, plus the TAWBURY to keep the rest.
Every watch on Finely Owned, from the Datejust to the Submariner, is collected in the watches guide. For the jewelry and bags beside them on the dresser, see our guide to storing luxury handbags and jewelry. If you’re buying for someone else, the luxury gifts for men guide starts with these accessories and ends with a pre-owned Rolex. And The Maisons tells how the house that made it began.
